Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Expanish LogoAlongside our partners at Expanish, the CGTC Office of Global Initiatives is excited to announce a new program to San Jose, Costa Rica for Summer 2027, designed to help students in the Health Sciences Division improve language skills as empathetic healthcare providers.

The two-week immersive study abroad program is designed for students (18+), alumni, and partner medical professionals in all health sciences programs who seek to improve and strengthen their Spanish language skills related to their medical profession. The model of the program engages students in immersive Spanish environments, including host families for accommodation, guided lectures, healthcare site visits, and cultural exploration.

Program Requirements:

Traveling July 17-31, 2027, the “Spanish for Medical Professionals” program in San Jose, Costa Rica, will engage students in an immersive Spanish environment.

  • A basic level of Spanish is preferred but not needed for participation.
  • Participants will be required to navigate travel and transportation in a Spanish-speaking country supported by in-country program coordinators.
  • Students may earn credits toward Spanish 1101 or 1102, and non-credit opportunities are also available. Students should speak with their program advisor about how any program aligns with their educational and career goals.

 

Cost:

The program cost is $2,995. This cost is only guaranteed to the first 15 who pay their deposit, and priority is given to students enrolled in the credit-bearing program.

  • Includes: Airport transfer, host family accommodation for 13 nights, 24/7 health and safety support, breakfast and dinner, 10 hours of general Spanish intensive, 6 hours dedicated to medical professions, guest lectures, medical site visits, five cultural activities, and a beach excursion.
  • Excludes: Airfare, tuition, and all fees if applicable, supplemental transportation costs, passport, visa, travel health insurance, additional meals, souvenirs, and other personal daily costs.

Group airfare will be considered by the Office of Global Initiatives if it provides a financial and operational benefit to the program.

 

Travel, Health, & Safety Requirements:

Students must have a valid U.S. passport, not expiring within 3 months of travel in order to participate in any Global Initiatives Study Abroad program. Visit, the U.S. Passport Information to apply. *The State Department has experienced delays. Any student interested in traveling abroad should apply for a passport immediately, even if not deposited on a trip. 

Participants in any Global Initiatives program must adhere to all health and safety guidelines of our partner institutions, organizations, and their countries. All participants in study abroad programs must complete an assumption of risk document prior to travel. 

The Office of Global Initiatives regularly monitors travel advisories related to health and safety from the U.S. State Department.
