CGTC Students and Staff Take Part in Spring Break Volunteer Experience Abroad

April 26, 2025

Warner Robins, Ga. – A handful of Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) students and staff took part in volunteer projects over Spring Break at Orphanage Emmanuel in Guaimaca, Honduras.

Nneka Illonah, Haley Schaffer, Katie Jelly, and Maddie Moseley joined staff from Dental Hygiene and Academic Affairs serving as needed across the orphanage leveraging their skills from their program areas like nursing, dental Hygiene and cosmetology.

“We are hopeful that a few Titans willing to go abroad and give up their time during Spring Break will serve as motivation to others to join in the future,” said JoBen Rivera-Thompson, CGTC’s director of Marketing, Public Relations and International Outreach.

“The Titan spirit is strong at the College and our students’ empathy, knowledge, skills, and workforce potential is ready to be displayed globally.”

In addition to their participation with CGTC, some of the students were also connected to a local church, First Evangelical Church Macon, which sent a team of community volunteers.

The Orphanage has a longstanding connection to local and regional faith-based organizations, educational institutions, small businesses, and community advocates in Central Georgia and regionally, as it serves the needs of more than 200 Honduran children annually through education, health care, and other social services.

The College will offer the volunteer program annually providing an outlet for volunteerism for diverse, skillful, and talented students, faculty and staff and members of the greater college community willing to spend time with children and the Orphanage’s schools to lead workshops, clinics, support projects, and more in a variety of technical topics.

At this time, the program is a non-credit opportunity, meaning students are not required to take coursework, the College is certain everyone involved can benefit from the experience of sharing their knowledge and skills and learning from international neighbors to become more empathetic global citizens.

Likewise, faculty, staff, and students across the campus community can help to shape the Titan Spirit globally.
