Warner Robins, Ga. – Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) students in the Student Government Association (SGA) took on a creative initiative to open a community garden this spring to help foster community and healthy living.
Earlier in the year, Donald Masinde, the SGA president, decided to set up a work group with members of the student body, teachers, and staff to build a community garden to help transform lives within our community.
The small community garden project is a collaborative effort to focus on “food as medicine”, helping the College’s community embrace healthy eating and living. The garden is housed on the Warner Robins Campus on the backside of the J-Building, “The Titans Community Garden was created to provide students and staff with the opportunity to work together and to build community while also providing them with fresh vegetables”, Masinde, SGA President. “These little garden projects can be implemented across our campuses, and we hope to transform lives through it. This is a follow-up from our steps to health campaigns that we started in January.”
So far, the project has been received with open arms, the CGTC Child Development Centers want to add some strawberries and take care of them. Biology and chemistry students are using the garden for some class activities. Fruit and vegetables are already growing.
Students can add plants to the garden but should be aware harvesting must be coordinated. An extra flower or vegetable is a welcome addition, as is a contribution to compost.
The garden also accepts donations of garden tools, hoses, and sprinkler heads, SGA intends to package some produce and distribute it to the community.
