CGTC Becomes the First College Campus in Central Georgia to Open a Disc Golf Course

May 24, 2024

Warner Robins, Ga. – A new campus life activity launched this spring as Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and the Houston County Disc Golf Club (HCDGC) partnered to bring an 18-hole competition-level disc golf course to its Warner Robins campus.

The latest addition to campus life now gives students and community members access to growing activities including the Roy H. “Sonny” Watson Wellness Complex home to football, soccer, and a walking track, elevating campus culture, the student experience and community interaction.

The work for funding the course was developed collaboratively between the CGTC Foundation, Student Activities, and HCDGC.

“Enrollment records, new athletics, wellness services and growing occupancy of the Lofts at Houston Central adjacent to campus, required us to look intentionally at new campus life activities,” said Tonya McClure the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at CGTC. “The growth and popularity of disc golf in Houston County combined with the availability of space on our campus made it a natural fit.”

McClure added that the success of disc golf will allow the College to explore other activities that make sense for other campuses.

“The hope for this course and any activity is to improve campus life and community outreach while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among students, faculty, and community members,” she added.

As golfers take to the course, and popularity for the sport continues, there is interest in hosting regional competitions and intramural sports events on the course. Potential plans also include the development of a disc golf team as a new club sport for CGTC students.

“The goal was to create a course that not only provides a fun and challenging disc golf experience and to involve everyone in the community,” said Will Perez, HCDGC club president. “Whether you are a seasoned pro or new to the sport, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.”

The course is open to the community from 10 a.m. till dusk, seven days a week. Golfers are asked to sign a one-time waiver with the college before their first tee-off on the course, available at, http://cgtc.io/discgolfwaiver and sign posted at the first tee.

The course is registered with the Professional Disc Golf Association of America. A full course description can be found at, https://www.pdga.com/course-directory/course/cgtc-disc-golf-course
