Agreement creates a streamlined pathway for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education

Warner Robins, Ga. – Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and South Georgia State College (SGSC) have established a curriculum articulation agreement designed to help students pursuing an Associate of Science in Education at CGTC transition to a Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Special Education at SGSC.

The agreement strengthens collaboration between the two institutions by creating a structured transfer pathway intended to minimize the loss of academic credit and reduce the duplication of coursework as students continue their education. Through this partnership, eligible CGTC graduates can apply approved coursework toward the bachelor’s degree at SGSC, supporting their continued academic progress toward careers in education.

“This agreement represents an important step in helping our students see a clear path from their first college credential to their long-term career goals,” said DeAnn Nester, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Central Georgia Technical College. “By working collaboratively with South Georgia State College, we are helping students build on the education they have already completed, make informed decisions about their next steps, and pursue opportunities to become the educators our communities need. Creating accessible pathways for student success is central to our commitment to serving Middle Georgia and beyond.”

Under the agreement, students who complete CGTC’s Associate of Science in Education may transfer eligible credits toward SGSC’s Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Special Education, subject to the receiving institution’s transfer policies and program requirements. The agreement also recognizes applicable general education core courses approved for transfer under the established articulation framework between the University System of Georgia (USG) and accredited colleges within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG).

Students must apply for admission to SGSC and meet the college’s applicable admission requirements. A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required for admission to SGSC, while a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for admission to the teacher preparation major. Additional requirements established by SGSC, USG, and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission may apply. Admission to SGSC does not guarantee acceptance into its teacher preparation program.

Candidates pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Special Education must complete a minimum of 127 semester hours of academic work and satisfy all applicable institutional and University System of Georgia graduation requirements. SGSC retains final authority over the acceptance and application of transfer credits in accordance with USG policies.

The agreement also establishes procedures for communication, advising, and periodic review to help ensure students receive accurate information about program requirements and transfer opportunities. Designated representatives from both institutions will coordinate implementation and communicate relevant academic program changes.

Through this partnership, CGTC and SGSC reaffirm their shared commitment to student achievement, educational advancement, and the development of a qualified workforce. The agreement provides eligible CGTC graduates with a defined pathway to continue their studies and pursue careers supporting the academic growth and success of future generations.
