Commencement Ceremony Decorum
The faculty and staff at Central Georgia Technical College congratulate you on your academic achievement, and wish to ensure that the commencement ceremony will be a fitting conclusion to this phase of your education! The Central Georgia Technical College commencement ceremony is, by its very nature, a festive occasion. The festivity manifests itself in many ways including the dress of the students, the faculty adorned in academic regalia, and the warmth, joy, and satisfaction of accomplishment.
The ceremony is also marked by a seriousness that signifies long, hard work on the part of everyone involved: students, faculty, administrators, parents, and spouses. As a consequence of the solemn nature of the ceremony, students and guests are requested to exercise a measure of decorum consistent with the occasion. Audience participation should be respectful of the celebration honoring both the commitment to learning and the fulfillment of dreams shared by all candidates crossing the stage tonight. This element of respectful celebration also extends to the parents, guardians, and spouses whose dedicated support brings pride to the fulfillment of these educational dreams, and to the family members aspiring to one day have their moment of walking across the stage.

2024 CGTC Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership Winner
David Watts, an Aviation Maintenance Technology student at Central Georgia Technical David Watts, an Aviation Maintenance Technology student from Bibb County, is the College’s winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) for 2024. David was selected for this honor through a competitive interview process and will serve as CGTC’s student of the year and an ambassador for technical education for 2024.
Watts is passionate about Aviation and technical education.
“I feel like through technical college, I will be joining the workforce with a much stronger foundation in what I will be doing on my career,” said Watts. “I’ve always been an advocate for technical college education and I love seeing the people around me succeed as well. I have always advocated for technical college because I believe it is the best pathway to success.”
Sharoko Farley
2024 Georgia Rick Perkins Award Winner
Sharoko Farley, a Commercial Truck Driving instructor, was named Central Georgia Technical College’s (CGTC) Rick Perkins Award (RPA) Winner for Excellence in Technical Instruction for 2024. Farley was selected as the College’s Instructor of the Year through a multi-step interview process after being nominated by his peers for the award.
On May 1, 2024, Farley was also announced as the Technical College System of Georgia’s 2024 Rick Perkins Award winner and will now serve as an ambassador for Technical Education statewide. The state award included a monetary gift and paid registration for the Master Teacher Experience. Additionally, Farley will represent the entire system of Technical Colleges as he advocates for technical education at the next Georgia legislative session.
Farley is a native of Eatonton, and after two decades of dedicated service in the trucking industry, he was presented with an unexpected opportunity to teach. He chose to enter the classroom to share his breadth of experience and hopefully instill greater safety standards in new commercial drivers.
“I believe in molding professionals with the right attitude while drawing on my life experiences to guide students through the importance of mindset and ethics.”
Outside of work, Farley enjoys spending time with family.

2024 Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) delegate
Shayla Cochran is the 2024 Dinah Culbreth Wayne Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) delegate.
Nominated by her instructor, Lisa Dennis, Cochran represented CGTC and the Adult Education Division at the EAGLE Leadership Institute in March in Atlanta. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors the state’s adult education students who have demonstrated superior achievement in their classes and programs.
“If it was not for the Adult Education program, the pre-GED test vouchers, the scholarship received, and the endless amount of encouragement from the staff which helped plant the seed of success, I would not be here” Cochran said of her path through the adult education program.

The Meaning of Academic Dress
The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. The ordinary dress of the scholar was that of a cleric, whether the scholar was a student or teacher. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap.
A statute of the University of Coimbra in 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was to be a much later development, and one which was to be standardized only in the United States in the late 19th century.
In America, an Intercollegiate Commission made up of representatives of leading institutions was formed to establish a standardized system of academic apparel. The Commission met at Columbia University in 1895 and adopted a code of academic dress that regulated the cut and style and materials of the gowns and prescribed the colors which were to represent the different fields of learning. In 1932, a committee appointed by the American Council on Education approved a code for academic costumes that has been in effect since that year. The American Council on Education revised and updated the code in 1959 and 1986.

The mission of the Central Georgia Technical College Foundation is to provide financial support for the advancement of Central Georgia Technical College. To accomplish this mission, the Foundation solicits donations and grants to provide student scholarships, innovative facilities and equipment, faculty and staff development, and other needs beyond the scope of the Institution’s budget.
The Central Georgia Technical College Foundation is guided by a board of volunteer trustees composed of business and community leaders from Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Dooly, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, and Twiggs counties. The Board of Trustees assists in establishing the College’s strategic plan for resource development, provides leadership for the advancement function, ensures the Foundation Board is composed of dedicated men and women capable of fulfilling their trustee responsibilities, and ascertains the effectiveness of the advancement activities on an annual basis.
