Goal 8: Information Technology for Extended and Enhanced Services

Infuse appropriate technologies throughout CGTC to extend and enhance programs and services.

Desired Long-term Outcome

Increase access to and training for information technology to extend and enhance CGTC technical education, adult literacy, and economic development programs and services.

Objectives

8A. Ensure that all CGTC programs and services are enhanced by achieving and maintaining technological parity; sufficient LAN and WAN network capacity; standard platforms, versions, hardware, and software; and security systems by FY2005 and every year through FY2007.

  1. Implement a comprehensive technology and technology infrastructure improvement project including all instructional, instructional support, and administrative technology to ensure that CGTC is on the leading edge technologically.

  2. Establish and maintain a three-year replacement/rotation cycle for all instructional and administrative desktop systems and servers to maintain technology that is current.

  3. Maintain software platforms and applications at the leading edge for instruction and operations.

  4. Provide additional desktop systems and increase capacity of file servers each year in proportion to enrollment growth and increase capacity on application servers as needed to meet demands for streaming video.

  5. Transfer additional software applications and data storage from the desktop by upgrading to enterprise-level switch configuration with adequate bandwidth to run applications from the server.

  6. Provide a robust WAN to enable browser-based access to CGTC programs and services at CGTC sites and at homes and worksites.

  7. Provide adequate service parts and diagnostic tools to ensure efficient operations.

8A1. Ensure that information technology services are secure from intrusion, interception, or other interference by FY2003 and each year there after through FY2007.

  1. Install egress filtering for CGTC’s networks.

  2. Provide network-traffic-level rather than desktop-level protection from viruses and any suspect packets.

8B. Increase availability of and participation in on-campus and remote web-enabled CGTC programs and services for the citizens and corporate citizens of central Georgia each year.

  1. Provide instructor presentation systems for all classrooms.

  2. Implement content engine capabilities to facilitate prescriptive learning and to enable enriched and highly interactive distance education.

  3. Continue to expand use of server-based and/or web-based testing software to enhance instructional delivery and content.

8B1. Optimize and personalize CGTC student-learning experiences by participating in the DTAE educational portal.

  1. Raise web-enhanced and online instruction to the “next level” by providing streaming audio/video capabilities and more advanced software that will deliver more content and enable higher levels of learner interaction.

  2. Participate as an early adopter/pilot site for development and enhancement of the local components of the DTAE educational portal.

8B2. Provide increased nonstop, on-demand learning opportunities via the GVTC and CGTC distance education.

  1. Use GVTC’s web-development platform and CGTC distance education applications to enhance and expand student distance education experiences.

  2. Expand GVTC/CGTC distance education program and course offerings.

8C. Participate in the implementation of a DTAE centralized data warehouse capable of sharing and exchanging information including a one-stop student record among DTAE units and with other agencies and educational entities.

  1. Participate as an early adopter/pilot site for development and enhancement of the local data mart component of the DTAE data warehouse.

  2. Continue to develop CGTC local management information system capabilities.

8D. Implement fully developed, web-accessible internal and external information system services including student information by FY2004 and update the system, as needed, each year.

  1. Provide a total web interface to BANNER enabling easy development of browser-based requests for customized queries.

  2. Provide faculty and student access to information through browser-based instructor and student pages.

  3. Explore development of a student “buzz-card” system for student transactions.
