Academy Sports + Outdoors has announced a training program affiliation with Georgia Quick Start and Central Georgia Technical College in support of their new distribution center in Jeffersonville. The distribution center will support new and existing Academy Sports + Outdoors retail stores in the fast growing, southeast market. Academy Sports + Outdoors ranks among the highest in sales per store and highest sales per square foot of any other sporting goods retailer in the country, and has experienced a compounded annual sales growth rate of 17% over the past ten years. In addition, the Company is one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, operating over 100 stores across the southeastern United States and employing over 13,000 associates.
The Academy Sports + Outdoors project is currently on schedule and given that there are not any delays related to construction or permitting, training will start on November 3rd in preparation for the December 1st receiving kick-off. Academy started accepting applications through the Georgia Department of Labor on August 18th to support their November 3rd training kick-off date. An additional round of hiring will be completed around January of 2009 in preparation for shipping which starts in February of 2009. Interested applicants can complete applications at the Department of Labor offices in Macon, Dublin, Warner Robins, or Milledgeville. Department of Labor applications will also be available at the Twiggs County Chamber of Commerce. Management positions will be posted on www.academy.com.
Quick Start is Georgia’s internationally acclaimed economic development program that provides customized workforce training at no cost to qualified new, expanding and existing businesses in Georgia. Since 1967, Quick Start has trained more than 600,000 employees through 5,100 projects with a broad range of industries.
The Quick Start training agreement was developed based on a Project Study that was conducted at the Academy Sports and Outdoors Distribution Center/Headquarters in Katy, Texas. The training agreement is based on Academy Sport’s commitment to provide approximately 250 new jobs for Georgians in the Twiggs County area. Quick Start will be designing and developing training material, as well as providing instructors, for the training.
The training program involves three distinct groups: Academy Sports and Outdoors, Central Georgia Technical College and Quick Start. Each group will be responsible for the successful completion of this program. The training assistance will not end when the Quick Start training is completed. Central Georgia Technical College will be available to assist Academy Sports and Outdoors with ongoing training programs.
