GIS
100 INTRODUCTION TO GIS (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: Program Admission
An introduction to the principles and applications of Geographic
Information Systems.
Examines the accuracy and applications of geographic information
including data structure, spatial analysis, data management, data
visualization, and data retrieval. Emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary
nature of GIS and its relevance to industry and society.
GIS
101 NATURAL RESOURCES FOR GIS (6-0-5)
Prerequisites: Program Admission
Introduces the geography and geology of the natural environment.
Emphasis will be placed on how natural features are represented
in GIS systems. The role of GIS in documenting and helping manage
these resources will be the main focus. Students will lean the basic
GIS principles as it relates to natural resources.
GIS
110 FUNDAMENTALS OF GEODESY (8-0-6)
Prerequisites: Program Admission
An introduction to the fundamentals of geodesy and earth mapping.
Topics covered include geodetic surveying, geodetic control, satellite
geodesy, coordinate systems, map projections, and map interpretation.
GIS 112
INTERMEDIATE GIS (8-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 100
This GIS course prepares students for advanced geographic analysis.
Students will integrate geographic concepts and techniques used
in spatial analysis, network analysis, and 3D analysis.
GIS 114 ADVANCED GIS: APPLICATION
DEVELOPMENT (8-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 112
This course provides practical experience in designing a Geographic
Information Systems model. Implementing a research design with spatial
data relevant to their field of interest, students sharpen their
GIS technical and problem-solving skills. GIS models useful to the
government and private industry are examined.
GIS 116
SPATIAL ANALYSIS IN GIS (8-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 112
This course provides advanced concepts to spatial analysis. The
course will briefly review the principles of statistics and relate
them to methods used in analysis of geographically referenced data.
The course will introduce sampling strategies for data used in GIS
using raster and vector data structures.
GIS
120 INTRODUCTION TO RASTER-BASED GIS (8-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 100
This course examines the principles of database design and management
including conversion fundamentals, and modeling techniques. Topics
include database integration concepts, development of user interface,
troubleshooting databases, and relational database concepts.
GIS
122 GIS IN NATURAL RESOURCES, BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT (5-0-5)
Prerequisites: GIS 112, GIS
114
This course includes an in depth survey of the various ways that
GIS applications are being used in science (geography, geology,
and meteorology), government (city, county, state, and federal)
and business (marketing). Topics will include data acquisition,
accuracy, spatial analysis, and presentation techniques necessary
for various GIS applications.
GIS
124 CARTOGRAPHIC DESIGN FOR GIS (3-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 110
This course provides a comprehensive study of GIS applicable to
cartography including cartographic principles, data acquisition
methods used in map production, and methods of basemap development.
GIS
126 DATABASE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT IN GIS (8-0-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 100
This course examines the principles of database design and management
including conversion fundamentals, and strategic planning. The needs,
alternatives, and pitfalls of database development and conversion
are discussed. Particular attention is paid to determining an appropriate
methodology, developing a conversion plan, and obtaining data quality
assurance to develop a GIS project.
GIS 127 GIS INTERNET MAPPING
(6-0-5)
Prerequisite: GIS 100
This course provides the opportunity for students to use the Internet
to publish maps on the Internet. Students will be introduced in
GIS applications development as it pertains to the Internet. Internet
mapping case studies will be examined.
GIS
128 GLOBAL POSITIONING FIELD TECHNIQUES (5-0-3)
Prerequisite: GIS 100
A course in the basic use of hand-held Global Positioning Systems
(GPS) unit in the field. The course will include an introduction
to terminology, hardware, and technology used in GPS. Instruction
will include the fundamentals of operating a hand-held GPS unit.
The course will introduce the basic techniques used in the determination
of feature location and completion of maps in GIS.
GIS 129 ADVANCED GLOBAL POSITIONING
SYSTEMS: PRECISION AGRICULTURE (5-0-3)
Prerequisite: Program Admission
Precision Agriculture leads production agriculture towards a new
era, in which innovative technology enables producers to prescribe
inputs and yields more efficiently and profitably. Precision Ag
technology combines Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning
Systems to scientifically manage resources and outputs in production
agriculture.
GIS
130 GIS INTERNSHIP (15-0-5)
Prerequisite: Completion of all GIS program courses
A directed field study program whereby students will apply classroom
instruction to real world GIS projects in the community.
