POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC TECHNICIAN (POL1) (EE)
Technical Certificate of Credit
The Polysomnographic Technician certificate is to provide the knowledge,
skills, attitudes, and techniques necessary for entry level employment in
the Sleep Medicine Technology field. The Polysomnographic Technician develops
competencies in and performs the basics of polysomnographic testing including
EEG waveform & sleep stage recognition, respiratory & ECG event recognition,
proper prepping techniques, the specific application of leads & sensors,
associated therapy interventions (CPAP, BiLevel PAP & Oxygen) and monitors
patients throughout the duration of the polysomnogram. These procedures are
performed under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic
Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the clinical director (MD, PhD, DO) or designee.
The program length is three to four quarters depending on the student’s
choice of course load. The first one to two quarters consists of health studies
core classes and the remaining one to two quarters consists of sleep technology
courses in the science of sleep technology and the required clinical skills
necessary for the entry level Polysomnographic Technician specialty.
Polysomnographic technology students must pass all courses each quarter with a
grade of "C" or above to progress to the next quarter and remain on track. Those
who receive a grade below a "C" remove themselves from the progression of the
program. The first polysomnographic class is offered Fall and Spring quarters,
followed by the polysomnographic practicum during Winter and Summer quarters.
Night practicum hours will be required for this program of study.
Prior to clinical rotations, students must submit to the instructor a current
physical exam, immunization forms, and proof of student professional liability
insurance. A ten panel drug screen and criminal background check are required
prior to placement at any clinical training site. A student who has been
convicted of a felony or misdemeanor may be admitted to the Polysomnographic
Technology program, but such a conviction may prohibit one from being accepted
into a clinical training site.
Black scrub clothes are the official Polysomnographic Technology uniform and
must be purchased prior to clinicals. Students will not be allowed to begin their
clinical affiliation until the above-mentioned forms, uniforms, and evidence of
current CPR certification are received.
