The Echocardiography program is a technical program designed to prepare students for work in the allied health field as Echocardiographers. The program offers both clinical and didactic instruction. Upon completion of the Echocardiography program, the student is eligible to sit for a national certification examination.
Admission Requirements to the Echocardiography Program
Application to the Echocardiography Program requires the following steps:
Application and admission to Central Georgia Technical College.
Submission of high school and college transcripts. Students who wish to transfer all the required core classes taken at another college must apply to CGTC and have all transcripts submitted by midterm Fall Semester.
Selection into the Echocardiography program major courses is via competitive selection process based primarily on the student's grade point average in prerequisite general education core and health technology core courses (see listing below).
ENGL 1101 (Composition and Rhetoric) Associate degree-level
MATH 1111 (College Algebra) Associate degree-level
BIOL 2113/Lab (Anatomy and Physiology I) Associate degree-level with Lab successful completion within the last five (5) years
BIOL 2114/Lab (Anatomy and Physiology II) Associate degree-level with Lab successful completion within the last five (5) years
PSYC 1101 (Introduction to Psychology) Associate degree-level
PHYS 1110/Lab (Conceptual Physics) Associate degree-level with Lab
* Upon completion of the prerequisite courses applicant must complete a "Progression Form" from the Registrar's office.
Submit Progression/Application Form to the Admissions Office. Students will not be considered for selection unless his/her name is on the list by midterm Fall semester.
Complete the PSB Aptitude for Practical Nursing Examination, 3rd Edition. Students may take the exam at any time while taking their required core courses, but no later than midterm Fall semester. Students may take the exam only twice per year.
Approximately 10 students will be selected at the end of Fall semester into the program major coursework, based on available program/clinical facility slots.
A criminal background check is required. A student who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor may be admitted to the Echocardiography program, but such a conviction may prohibit one from being accepted into a clinical training site and/or taking the certification examination. A pre-application form to determine eligibility is available from the Echocardiography Program Director or at www.cci-online.org.
A student may be required to show proof of Hepatitis B vaccination before being placed in a clinical site.
Academic Progress: Echocardiography students must pass all courses each semester with a grade of a "C" or above and maintain a GPA of a 2.0 or higher in order to progress to the next semester and remain on track. Those who receive a grade below a "C" on any course, may remove themselves from the track progression in the program and may have to wait until the course is offered again (usually the next year) to apply to repeat the course. Admission back into the program is dependent upon space available at the time the course is offered.
